Gardening Maintenance Programme

This project provides youth employment opportunities that also have a focus on specific support for some of the most vulnerable members of our local community.

As part of this scheme, the trainees are required to work towards NVQ level 1 in horticulture with the opportunity to progress towards a level 2. The nature of the project straddles three main priorities, these being; supporting vulnerable members of the community; housing and the environment.

This support takes the form of a garden maintenance service with some planting and soft landscaping. Costs of the scheme are currently sourced through grant aid and a maintenance sub-contract that enables free service provision.

The project currently targets only the Walker ward within the local area. The eligibility criteria for the scheme are:

  • over 60s
  • infirm or medically unfit
  • those without dependants living at home able to undertake the work
